Our Sustainability Committment

Over the past several years, the team at Blossom & Vine Floral have made several steps towards running a more sustainable and earth concious business. Given we work with products of nature, we see the detrimental effects of climate change first hand - from shipment delays due to unprecedented fires throughout California and flooded farms in South America and our own Fraser Valley - shorter growing seasons due to higher temperatures and droughts - the list goes on.

Traditional floristry creates an embarassing amount of waste. You may have noticed when you receive a bouquet from Blossom & Vine, it comes wrapped in simple plain kraft paper and tissue paper and we wrap the stems in paper towel and a vegetable starch based compostable plastic dog-waste bag - yep…. A poop bag. We searched high and low for a compostable option specifically made for our intended purpose and came up short. So URibe Bros. compostable dog waste bags it was. We know compostable bio-plastics are not the be-all, end-all, but until we can find a perfect solution, we hope this choice creates a less negative impact on our environment than the usual multiple sheets of single use plastic cello-wrap traditionally used.

Now onto the new news. As of Spring 2022, Blossom & Vine Floral is committing to not using traditional “Oasis”/floral foam in any of our daily delivery arrangements. Our online catalogue has been updated and features arrangements in vessels that don’t require the support and structure that foam provides. All of our arrangements will be made in a classic glass/pottery vase with fresh water.

For some of our more technical designs, we may use a waterproof tape grid and/or a ball of chicken-wire inside the vessel to provide a more sturdy base. In rare occurrances, we may utilize a new product called Agro-wool which is made of a basalt rock wool that has been compressed to create a firm foam like product that is 100% compostable and able to be reused.

This change will mean arrangements that are handled during delivery may require a top-up of water upon delivery more urgently than they would have when they were made in foam.

Customer experience, product quality and our integrity as a business are still our top priorities. Our practices should match our values and we’re sure this change will only help us create better and more beautiful art in the long term. Hope you like the new collection!
